Indiana Preserve Hunting Update
An update by
Committee Chairman Mike Ohlmann

In Mid October the Judge ruled against the Humane Society of the United States in its petition to enter into the Indiana Deer Farmers VS IDNR lawsuit. This ruling was encouraged by the Kentuckiana Chapter's petition to enter as a friend of the court. While it is hopeful that this will allow the agreement reached between IDNR and the Indiana Deer Framers to be signed thee is some concern that the appeal filed by HSUS in hopes of slowing or derailing the agreement will put off a final settlement.

When asked about the ruling IN deer farmer Rodney Bruce stated; " It is a good day for sportsmen when courts rule against the anti hunting movement".

KYANA Chapter SCI has long held that "access and opportunity is key to hunting's future" and early on called for cooperation and tolerance between State agencies and private enterprise.

Mr. Bruce echoed some of our sentiment at the announcement of the Judges ruling by saying; "This ruling will allow the agreement to move forward and allow the well run preserves and sportsmen of Indiana to prove to everyone that all the negative attention sportsmen and preserves have received is unfounded"!

Meanwhile in a neat twist of fate; it appears that with a lack of a definitive agreement, the Preserves will be allowed to operate along the general lines of the agreement. Since the agreement as written might eventually phase out preserves, HSUS's interference keeps that clock stopped and therefore may actually be helping the preserve operators!
