Ivan Schell, Mike Ohlmann and Bob Edwards
 |
Under partly cloudy sky's
that may have kept
a number of skeptical participants
away,
several KYANA SCI members
took the opportunity
to tune up for the deer
gun season, with
our chapters 2nd CPM shooting
event of the
year. The event was held
Sept 30 and featured
both center fire and muzzle
loading rifle
competitions. As with the
spring event it
was held at the beautiful
Patton's Creek
Farm thanks to the generosity
of members
Bill and Mike Snyder.
Ivan Schell, who had confessed
to frequenting
the new indoor rifle range
in Oldham County,
seemed to be the shooter
to beat in all 3
competitions. Ivan placed
first in the muzzle
loading competition which
consisted of 5
shots at 150 yards at a
deer silhouette.
Next up was the High Power
rifle competition.
In the first leg of this
event, 5 shots were
fired standing unsupported
at 75 yards. All
shooters faired pretty
well at this distance
but quick calculations
indicated that again
Ivan held a slight lead
as the targets were
moved back to 200 yards.
Mike Ohlmann closed
the gap in the 2nd leg
where 5 shots were
fired from a sitting position.
With general
hits on the deer silhouette
being high throughout
the field, the aggregate
score was tallied
based upon higher points
given for heart
shots which awarded the
win to Mike by a
single point.
Shooters Take Aim at 200 Yards

The shooters moved on to
the action event
where 3 shots were fired
again offhand at
a running deer target.
(Which was actually
a sled affair towed being
a 4 wheeler through
a series of pulleys that
allowed for a safe
situation.) Though it did
not have the springing
leaps of a typical bounding
whitetail the
established shooting window
limited the time
and put pressure on the
shooters to fire
quickly to get all 3 shots
off. At the end
of the round Bob Edwards
and Ivan tied each
having 3 hits and one apiece
in the vitals.
A shoot off decided the
match and again each
scored solid hits but close
examination found
Bob Edwards to have won
by a hair!
As the last of the equipment
was being put
away a sprinkle of rain
reminded us how good
fortune and luck play apart
but the overall
feeling was that practice
was the key to
good shooting.
The CMP committee is planning
a number of
events for 2007. The events
are planned with
an emphasis on fun, camaraderie
and developing
better shooting skills.
The variety of events
and the youth and adult
levels of competition
offer something for everyone.
So if you have
ever missed a shot or if
you think you might
ever miss in the future
then an excuse and
or opportunity to get in
a little practice
is coming up again soon!
