Kentuckiana Chapter SCI Board Meeting Minutes
July 31, 2006

Call to order:  Meeting called to order by Chapter President, Kent Cooper.  A quorum was established.

Approval of Minutes:  Chapter secretary, Bill Hook, distributed minutes from the July 10, board meeting.  Mike Ohlmann made a motion that the minutes be approved as submitted, motion seconded by Tom Hebert.  Motion passed unanimously.

Treasurer Report: Treasure’s report was given by Mike Maddox.  Mike distributed financial spreadsheets for the board’s review.  No questions were raised and a motion was made by Ivan Schell that the Treasurer’s report be accepted.  Motion seconded by Mike Ohlmann.  Motion passed unanimously.

Old Business:

A motion was made by Ivan Schell and seconded by Jim Gladden to approve checks issued to pay CPA for preparation of tax returns.  Motion passed unanimously.

President Cooper reminded the board that the exhibition, Forging an American Identity: The Art of William Ranney, is scheduled to open September 29, 2006 and will run through January 1, 2007.   The chapter has donated $1000 to this exhibition as a corporate sponsor.   President Cooper stated that press releases would be forthcoming.

Chapter vice president, Tom Hebert, presented to the board a proposal to help fund a youth ATV safety program offered through the 4-H Youth Development Program (southern Indiana).  Funds would be used to purchase safety equipment (helmets, goggles, gloves) for the young participants.  Tom distributed letters from an Indiana Conservation Officer (Mark Farmer) and the Executive Director of the program (Debbie Carlton) requesting our support.  Motion to fund this program in the amount of $450 was made by Mike Ohlmann, seconded by Jim Gladden.  Motion passed unanimously.

Mike Ohlmann referenced an article in the Sunday, July 30th, Courier - Journal by Gary Garth, about the chapter’s Youth & Apprentice Hunter Education Program.

New Business:

President Cooper reviewed the KWCP Program and asked the board to consider if the chapter should become affiliated with this program.  After much discussion, the board decided to table the issue until further notice.

Mike Maddox reported that the chapter’s annual dove shoot will be held on September 2, 2006.  Gary Roman’s dove fields will once again be the location.  Mike Maddox and Bill Hook will coordinate sending out flyers to the membership.

President Kent Cooper reported the SCI National has asked each chapter to nominate an Outstanding PH of the year.  The board deferred this issue to the next board meeting.

President Cooper reported that the plans for the December 2, 2006 General Membership meeting are moving forward.  There was a discussion concerning a possible speaker for the evening.

The last item for discussion was the fall newsletter issue.  It was determined that all news items and articles be submitted to Jim Gladden on or before September 22nd.

Past President, Ivan Schell, suggested that we may want to consider a special newsletter issue recognizing the 10th anniversary of the Kentuckiana SCI Chapter.

The board was in agreement and felt that the winter newsletter issue would be the right choice. Newsletter committee co-chairs Bill Hook and Jim Gladden will work with the newsletter committee on this project.

Chapter President, Kent Cooper, thanked Bob Morton for hosting our board meeting.

The board meeting was adjourned.  The next meeting date and location was not determined at the close of the meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Bill Hook, Chapter Secretary

Safari In A Box Donated to Salato Wildlife Education Center

Located on the 132 acre Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) Game Farm complex, Salato Wildlife Education Center offers a wide variety of educational programs and workshops year round for children and adults. Annually, over 100,000 children visit the Salato Center for interpretive tours and quality wildlife education. In addition, staff educators travel to schools throughout the state conducting educational programs for primary and secondary age children.

The mission and education focus at the Salato Center provided the Kentuckiana Division Sables and Kentuckiana Chapter SCI the perfect entity with which to donate the first SIAB. Sherry Maddox, Kentuckiana Sables Division Rep and Kent Cooper, Chapter President presented the SIAB to Tim Slone, Director KDFWR and Rebecca Smith, Conservation Education Program Leader. After a review of the SIAB contents, ideas regarding utilization of the items in the box were discussed. Not only will the SIAB be used at the center, educators will take the box out to schools during their educational presentations. Tim Slone and Rebecca Smith expressed their appreciation and enthusiasm over receiving the box and the variety of ways they will utilize the contents.
